goodgameTV Hires Carl Macek as new Director of Content Development - March 9th, 2010

New York, NY.  March 10, 2010

goodgameTV, LLC announced the appointment of Carl Macek as the new Director of Content Development effective as of March 1, 2010.  Macek’s main responsibility for goodgameTV is to cultivate key relationships with premium content producers and acquire content licenses for exclusive distribution on goodgameTV.com.

“Carl is a respected figure in the entertainment industry.  His work with Robotech as well as many other anime, films, and studio projects have left a lasting influence on pop culture over the last two decades,” says Brian Tang, co-founder of goodgameTV. “More importantly, his track record and experience as the co-founder and president of Streamline Pictures proves that he knows what we’re going for and how to get it done.  If he can achieve success with goodgameTV as he did with Streamline, watch out.”

Macek attended California State University, Fullerton earning a degree in the theory and criticism of visual media and has over thirty years of experience in the entertainment industry.  He is most known as the creator and guiding force behind Robotech - a popular and influential 85-episode animated television series.  Macek later founded Streamline Pictures, one of the first American companies to successfully deal with the acquisition and distribution of Japanese animation to the domestic American market. Among the many titles released by Streamline are Hayao Miyazaki’s Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Fist of the North Star, Akira, Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, and Lupin III: Mystery of Mamo. Streamline’s distribution business was ultimately assigned to Orion Pictures, freeing Macek up to pursue more creative pursuits.

Impact in Film

Macek is largely credited with exposing and proliferating Japanese animation to the US market.  Many of the films he worked on or distributed are arguably the most influential and famous anime titles to-date and are universally recognized as genre classics.  These works have later gone on to inspire many aesthetic styles and storytelling methods in the American cartoon industry.

Macek is a staple guest celebrity in the comic book and anime convention scene and is one of the more recognizable names in the American animation industry.

goodgameTV Official Launch - August 28th, 2009
goodgameTV is the celebration of our gaming history and future. It's the coming together of gamer friends to talk about and show the world what it is that we're so passionate about. But it's done in a way that's painstakingly thoughtful and creative so that we can grab the world's attention and say "Hey, you idiots, this is who we are and this is what we want!" No more over-the-counter sellout shows, games, and products, no more industry "experts" who don't even play games shoving "content we want" down our throats. This is about us, from the perspective of a gamer, thinking long and hard about what it is that we actually want and doing it.

After a full year of hard work and lots of twists and turns, we've finally arrived. To get here was no small task.

Our coming together was made possible back in 2006 at a store named NYCLAN, a gamer's Mecca in Manhattan. That game center was where we all met, LAN'd, played tournaments, made our first shows, and became friends. It's also where we immersed ourselves into the gaming world beyond any casual or competitive gamer or industry insider. Because we lived, ate, and breathed this world 24/7 beyond what any one gamer, developer, or marketer is ever exposed to - everyday was a conversation with hundreds of gamers about their respective lifestyles and regarding deep philosophical debates about the games themselves. We received so much insight, feedback, and most importantly, inspiration to do something and put it all together.

In early 2008, we started assembling our team. What was just a hobby, a fleeting topic that we discussed but never actually pursued, was now our mission set in motion. Friends of NYCLAN: video production crews, web programmers, techies, business and financial veterans - all hardcore gamers, were all on the same path to realize our one goal. What we didn't yet anticipate was how hard this goal would be.

At first the thought was to get a "rapid prototype" and then to pitch to investors. Both were achieved with pitches generating moderate, not explosive interest. How could this be when we were jumping for joy at the thought of this concept? Investors seemed very tempered about everything, always a poker face with nobody ever anteing up. We were all frustrated.

Hindsight is 20-20 and now we know the reason. In any other year with any other conditions, I'm sure we would have been a hit. The economic downturn and financial crisis in NYC, the country, and the world had left investor coiffeurs barren. Nobody was getting funding, everybody was frustrated. Furthermore, the double-whammy of the media-industry meltdown and the disappearance of advertisement dollars kept all would-be investors at bay.

So we went back to the drawing board. How do we prove that media isn't dying and that there is a way to actually create a real business out of this? How do we offset the seemingly uncontrollable costs of bandwidth and content? Is it even possible to do it just by ourselves without money from others, especially because there was no money? It was after so many conversations with techies, business people, and producers that we finally found the answer. We had to revamp our entire approach and mentality and scrapped our old prototype. We were going to self-fund the entire project with our own savings and paychecks and start it super old-school, grass-roots style. Motivating ourselves to start over fresh was tough, but we believed enough to do it.

So here we are one year later. The production teams on board are by far the strongest, most stable, and most committed to the goal. They are our teammates and we live and die by them. The technology is completely redesigned: better, sleeker, and newer. The business is fresh and exciting and designed to be a real, long-lasting enterprise.

We thank our cast members, production crews, programmers, technologists, business minds, friends, and family. If we were to miss just one of these ingredients, the whole thing would have collapsed. But everyone believed in us and stuck with us, and here we are. It's been a long and bumpy ride, but we finally made it. And now our story is just beginning.

Thank you so much, everyone.

And dear viewer, please take the time to consider what we're doing, what we're on the verge of, and decide if you want to help support us.

We're on a pretty tight budget (by pretty tight, I mean REALLY tight). Your continued support, belief in us, and help spreading the word will grow our ability to make better content for you. What we have here at Launch Day is a sampling of what we can do with our meager resources. The more Subscribers we get, the exponentially better our content will become. That's our promise.

If you choose to subscribe, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being part of something that we think is so special - the beginning of the internet-TV gaming revolution.

Industry News
When Insomniac announced the co-op focused Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One at Gamescom last month, we were all thinking the same thing: How did the series with the clever titles - Going Commando; Up Your Arsenal; Size Matters; Quest for Booty - miss out on the most obvious title here?

4play. Duh.

It turns out the guys at Insomniac didn't miss it, they just decided not to use it. "At the end of the day, I think we didn't want to scare off the parents who might be buying the game for their kid," series writer TJ Fixman told an audience at PAX this weekend. "So we went with 'All 4 One.'" Better still, they had other names, four of which they shared with us last night and, since we heart you, we'll share with you here.
  • Multiple Organisms
  • Bros b4 Foes (Community Manager James Stevenson clarified the 'b4' spelling)
  • Fiends with Benefits
Even better, we were later told there's a spreadsheet with over a hundred possible titles on it but, without that in our possession (send it to us, Insomniac!) we've got to do the next best thing. We're asking for your contributions in the comments below. But before you get to that, we're going to ask you to vote for your favorite title in the poll below. Our guess: "All 4 One" isn't going to make the top spot.

During today's Gearbox Software panel, the developer took the opportunity to assuage concerns that new franchises like Borderlands and Duke Nukem are siphoning away time from its previous projects, like the Brothers in Arms series or the announced-in-2009-and-still-invisible Aliens: Colonial Marines. Pitchford even commented on one of the studio's three unannounced projects.

"We're not announcing anything today, but we want to tell you guys that we really care about this franchise a lot," Gearbox co-founder Brian Martel said. "It's something we created and it really means a lot to us. It's not just a game about the combat. It's about the soldiers in the war. We'll deal with Baker and his men in future games for sure." So while they're not confirming that a Brothers in Arms game is in development currently, they are confirming that one will be at some point. But Martel did give us an idea of what we might expect from a future BiA offering: "But we also may do some other things that maybe treat the game in some different ways and take some different directions." So, modern warfare then?

Pitchford then jumped in, agreeing. "It was our first original IP. So we'll be taking care of that one." Further confirming that a Brothers in Arms game is possibly in production, Pitchford said, " We've got a lot of action right now, but we're not ready quite yet to bring it out. We want to make sure we know we've got it right before we tell you what we're doing."

When first examining the Japanese hardware sales numbers for August 23 through 29, we couldn't help but gawk at the PSP's astronomical sales surge. What could be the cause of such a dramatic shift (over 100 percent up at 55K units in just seven days)? As was the case with Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G before it, the release of Monster Hunter spin-off Monster Hunter Diary Poka Poka Airu Village placed the PSP firmly in the top spot for Japanese hardware sales.

Beyond folks purchasing handhelds just to play the game, a bundle pack being offered which includes a PSP for ¥33,131 ($392) couldn't have hurt. The most important thing to know about the game, however, isn't that it's related to Monster Hunter -- the most important thing is that it's all about adorable kittens. Not just any kittens: helper kittens! We'd love to stay and tell you more about it, but we've got a hot date with the madness-inducing trailer for the game.

PAX 2010: CEO Randy Pitchford announces purchase of all future rights to 3D Realms' storied action hero; Borderlands free update with raised level cap coming soon.

Who was there: Gearbox Software claimed the 2010 Penny Arcade Expo as its own on Friday with the shock announcement that it would see Duke Nukem Forever to the finish line in 2011. On hand to discuss the move, as well as the rest of Gearbox's announced development slate, was CEO Randy Pitchford, chief creative officer Brian Martel, creative director Mikey Neumann, licensing head David Eddings, and cinematics director Brian Thomas.

"Always bet on Duke."

What they talked about: Though Friday's revelation that Gearbox would be finishing up 3D Realms' Duke Nukem Forever was perhaps the biggest news out of the Penny Arcade Expo, the studio followed it up with another headline-worthy announcement. Namely, Pitchford revealed in front of the PAX 2010 collective that Gearbox has acquired the Duke Nukem intellectual property, including Duke Nukem Forever and all future developments in the franchise, from 3D Realms. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Explaining how the deal went down, Pitchford noted that he and Martel had actually met while working at 3D Realms, way back in 1997, and Gearbox still had a strong relationship with George Broussard and others at that studio. "I feel like I owe Duke Nukem my career," he said, before bringing up last year's turmoil of 3D Realms' closure and the lawsuits that resulted. "That day sucked, but you can't kill Duke."

He said that even with the game's future grim, about eight or nine former 3D Realms developers continued to work on Duke Nukem Forever, including Allen Blum, who has been working on the franchise since its inception in 1991. The game they were making is the same that is being made at Gearbox, he said, noting that Blum and the others--but not Broussard--are still on the team. He also said that the game is currently in the polish phase, and that "arrangements need to be made with first-parties and retailers." Apparently, 2K Games hadn't even informed retailers of the game's existence until it was announced on Friday.

"The game that is happening is 3D Realms' game," he said. In an emotional moment, Pitchford went on to say that, "I didn't buy [Duke Nukem] from them, they sold it to me," emphasizing how protective 3D Realms has been of its quintessential action hero.

"Gearbox was the only home appropriate for the Duke Nukem brand," Broussard said as part of a statement. "They are very talented and possess the perfect perspective and understanding of the brand. Their vision for its future direction is exciting and unbelievable. I personally cannot wait for fans to see their unique take on the franchise."

"The Gearbox Software team and I are ecstatic that we have grown to a position to be able to pick up and carry the torch and help Duke rise back to glory in his time of need," Pitchford added. "Fans of the legendary hero and all the incredible talent that have ever helped him all deserve the very best support that we can bring."

For more information on Duke Nukem Forever, check out GameSpot's hands-on with the game from PAX 2010.

As for the rest of what Gearbox has been working on, the team first discussed what was going on with the Borderlands franchise. Namely, Pitchford noted that Borderlands' fourth, and ostensibly final, downloadable content add-on--Claptrap's New Robot Revolution--will arrive on September 28. He also noted that all Borderlands owners will receive a free patch for the game that rebalances it and increases the level cap to 69.

Of that innuendoed number, Pitchford said that they did not want to alienate Borderlands fans who purchased General Knox for the sake of gaining that DLC's 11-level cap increase. "We realized that if we added eight levels, with the cap at level 61, it wouldn't piss off people who paid for the General Knox DLC." A release date for the free patch has yet to be determined, but Pitchford noted that it should arrive some time around the launch of Claptrap's New Robot Revolution.

Martel then briefly discussed Gearbox's Brothers in Arms franchise, saying that they had nothing to announce today. However, he did emphasize Gearbox's commitment to the franchise, hinting that the series may branch out from the characters established in recent installments. "We'll have some things to talk about soon. We're not ready quite yet to bring it out," Pitchford added.

Martel also didn't have any news about Aliens Colonial Marines, noting that it has been difficult to talk about the game due to involvement from rights owner 20th Century Fox and publisher Sega. However, Pitchford seemed to bend the rules a bit, calling for a rapid-fire succession of screenshots of the game to be shown on the conference hall's big screen.

Though brief, the shots showed a group of marines engaging richly detailed alien drones in what appeared to be a space station's corridors. The shots were highly reminiscent of the tone established by Ridley Scott's 1979 original Alien.

Quote: "Always bet on Duke."--Randy Pitchford.

Takeaway: The next game Gearbox will deliver is the Duke Nukem Forever that has been more than a decade in the making, with many of the original developers still working on the project. Of course, fans of the series probably won't believe it until they see it, a fact Gearbox recognized and promised to do something about as soon as possible.

Just two days after revealing its stewardship of the Duke Nukem Forever title at PAX, Gearbox Software just revealed that it has actually purchased the Duke Nukem brand. Gearbox president Randy Pitchford told an audience at PAX this afternoon that they're not just making sure Duke Nukem Forever makes it to store shelves, but they've actually purchased the entire Duke Nukem IP. "We actually bought the brand," Pitchford told fans. "We bought Duke Nukem."

A press release timed to go out with the announcement has some more information. Here's the big picture quote: "Gearbox Software announced today that it has acquired the full intellectual property rights of the 'Duke Nukem' brand including Duke Nukem Forever and all future projects in a cooperative deal made with 3D Realms." Even more interesting: "The first product to be available under the Duke Nukem brand will be the long awaited Duke Nukem Forever." Naturally, if they're buying the brand you can imagine DNF won't be the last game to feature the Duke.

Pitchford made a point to say that Alan Blum, the creator of the Duke Nukem franchise, is now with Gearbox. "He's on the 10th floor with his team," he said. He also wanted to explain that this franchise couldn't simply have been purchased by anyone. "I didn't buy it from [3D Realms]," Pitchford said. "They sold it to me." In the press release, 3D Realms' Scott Miller said, "Gearbox was handpicked as the new home for Duke Nukem because of their continued passion, commitment and long-time heritage with the brand and 3D Realms."

So, Duke Begins then?

We've got bad news and good news. First, the bad news: The new Borderlands DLC pack - that's Claptrap's New Robot Revolution - won't include the two most requested features. Those would be a new level cap and a rebalancing of the main game to accomodate the new level cap. And neither of those will be included with the latest DLC.

Now the good news: They are being included in a free update for the game across all three platforms, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford told a live PAX audience that his studio resisted making it a part of a DLC pack since, if they included those features, "you'd have to buy every previous DLC" to get access to said features. So, instead, Pitchford said they were going to release a "free update to Borderlands that will both rebalance the original game around the level cap and increase the level cap for everyone."

But Pitchford said the studio still struggled with how high to raise it. On the one hand, Gearbox didn't want to match the 11-point upgrade that many people paid for with the "General Knox" DLC, but on the other the devs didn't want it to be too low, like 5-points. Instead, they came up with another number. "With the current level cap at 61," Pitchford teased, "we realized if we added 8 levels ... "

The audience groans.

So the new level cap is 69 and it will be released sometime around the October 12th Borderlands Game of the Year Edition release.

Somewhere there's an alternate dimension where monster games like Rampage and War of the Monsters are not oddities but rather fine examples of a whole "monsters destroying crap" genre. Eat Them!, which I played recently at PAX 2010, is a game directly from that dimension.

In Fluffy Logic's (Savage Moon) upcoming PSN release, you play as a monster that you've customized every slimy, scaly inch of, from his shoulder rockets to his tentacle legs. Then ... well, you destroy shit.

A new, bug-free version of Crackdown 2's "Toy Box" DLC pack was released yesterday morning on Xbox Live Marketplace, according to Ruffian Games. Unfortunately, rather than a patch, the DLC has been re-issued, meaning that folks who downloaded the content will need to delete it and redownload. The new version fixes issues ranging from "crash on loading" to issues with the narrator's voice and Achievement problems, which we reported on earlier this week.

Ruffian says that the glitches were "caused by problems mastering the DLC package," thus the reissue rather than a patch. The developer assures players that "all will be fine" after the download, which was available publicly as of yesterday morning. We've yet to hear of any issues with the re-release, but feel free to let us know if you find any.

We can all agree that Sonic Unleashed had some pretty deep lows -- specifically, the Werehog. But the daytime segments in the game showed promise; almost a return to form. These areas of the game, for the unaware, combined Sonic Adventure-like 3D free-running elements alongside more classical, 2D elements from the series' past. It was easily the highlight of that game.

And Sega knows it, which explains why Sonic Colors is pretty much nothing but those portions of gameplay. That alone would make for a pretty serviceable Sonic game, but Sega has also added Wisps: small alien creatures who imbue Sonic with one-time-use powers.
